Therme Manchester, which will be the UK’s first city-based wellbeing resort when it opens, has submitted a new design to the local council for approval.

Developer Therme Group has revisited its original concept for the wellbeing resort and, subject to approval, the £250 million construction will begin later this year, with works scheduled to take around two years.

A period of public consultation saw considerable support for the design, with 91 per cent of the responses agreeing it is more impressive than the original.

Located in Peel L&P’s Trafford City, Therme Manchester will combine hundreds of water-based activities with wellbeing treatments, art, nature and technology.

The concept for the resort has changed from being a single building (with zones) and an undulating roof line, to a more pavilion-style concept. At the centre of the new design is an urban wellbeing garden inspired by an English meadow.

The 65,000sqm design includes separate, connected structures immersed in a natural landscape. The roof will provide an outdoor customer terrace with views through to the Bridgewater Canal.

The project also include the creation of a new connection to the canal.

“Therme Manchester will have a transformative impact on the city. The experience is designed around physical and mental wellbeing, human contact with water, steam, fresh air and nature, optimised in an environment that sets itself apart from the pressures of daily metropolitan life."

The design improvements aim to provide better access for the large numbers of expected visitors, with three entrances and a landscaped green boulevard to receive people travelling by car.

Therme Manchester has enlisted the services of London-based architectural and design practice Fletcher Priest as collaborating architects.

Fletcher Priest will support Therme ARC, Therme Group’s in-house architecture practice and design company.

Therme Group is currently rolling out its global development strategy with projects under development in the United Kingdom, mainland Europe, North America and Asia Pacific.
