The new Cairndale Spa has opened at the Cairndale Hotel in Scotland, following a multi-million pound investment.

The family-owned spa officially opened on July 8. Spanning almost 1,300sqm, the two-storey facility has been created in a bid to put Dumfries on the tourist map as a leading wellness destination.

The spa, which replaces the hotel’s existing leisure club, includes a thermal pool with jets, water blades and airbeds, an aroma steam room and a herbal steam room. There is also a Himalayan salt sauna, infrared sauna, herbal lounge and rasul, all supplied by Unique Pool.

The hammam, by CPA Bespoke Joinery, includes a private bathing suite along and there is also a dedicated café and juice bar. The spa also has a Brass Monkey ice bath.

“Many of the staff here at Cairndale are local to Dumfries and are proud to be a part of this exciting new chapter. Their wellbeing will always be at the heart of everything we do – this creates a strong team, which in turn can ensure we deliver unrivalled experiences to guests.”

Curated spa treatments

Cairndale worked with Claire Caddick from Sparticulate and Mark Green from Curveline Design to design the spa.

The menu places an emphasis on respecting the planet and supporting British wellness brands. Treatments use VOYA , Tribe517 and Gaia Skincare, marking the brand’s first Scottish hotel partnership.

The spa will also retail the exclusive Cairndale x Annandale Collection – a range of whisky and vanilla-scented products created in collaboration with the Annandale Distillery.

“A huge amount of work has gone into curating the new menu for The Cairndale Spa, to ensure we deliver valuable and inclusive wellbeing programmes,” said Claire Caddick, managing director for Sparticulate.

“The concept for the spa is built around nature and diversity. The menu includes products developed exclusively for Cairndale, reflecting the provenance of the geographical location.”

A boost to the local economy

As Cairndale Hotel and Spa director Matthew Wallace Jr explains, it is hoped the spa will generate an estimated additional income in excess of £12 million over the next ten years.

Wallace, who has overseen the development since its inception, believes this will boost the local economy and bring new visitors to the region.

Treatment beds were supplied by Ellisons, furniture by CCP Contract Furniture and Alexander Rose, and towels, robes and spa linens are by BC SoftWear. The spa booking system is by Trybe.

“Cairndale Spa has been in the planning for a long time. It is fantastic to see our hard work and the investments come to fruition and I genuinely believe that we have created something outstanding that the whole region can be proud of.”

“Our team has worked tirelessly to create a space where guests can relax, unwind and experience luxury bespoke treatments and spa packages,” said Wallace.

“We are fully committed to supporting and working in partnership with tourism organisations and local businesses to help put Dumfries firmly on the map as a leading and popular Borders destination.”

The project has a net-zero focus, which has led to the inclusion of an enhanced heating system to reduce carbon emissions, plus the use of air-source heat pumps.
