The Cairndale Hotel in Dumfries, Scotland has revealed detailed plans for its £2m, two-storey spa.

Scheduled to open to guests later this spring, the 1,300sqm spa will replace the hotel’s existing leisure club.

The family-owned and run hotel was awarded almost £400,000 in development funding towards the project from South of Scotland Enterprise.

The hotel is working with Claire Caddick from Sparticulate and Mark Green from Curveline Design to create the Spa at Cairndale.

“The concept for Spa at Cairndale is built around nature and diversity. The menu includes products developed exclusively for the spa, reflecting the provenance of the geographical location. The focus is on retreat programming and multiplicity, bringing wellness to all with no exceptions.”

Curated spa retreats

Tribe517 is curating the retreat programme, tapping into the natural benefits of the region. These will be structured with full daily itineraries, including activities in the locality, speakers, workshops and bespoke spa menus.

“A huge amount of work is going into these retreats to ensure we deliver valuable wellbeing and inclusive programmes,” said Caddick.

The Natural Grounding Retreat, for example, will include foraging on the coast and in the forest, while the Unapologetically Me Retreat will focus on body positivity and self-confidence.

“This will be an immersion into embracing ourselves, self love and acceptance,” said Caddick. “It will include one-to-one sessions with experienced coaches and happiness workshops.”

The Writer’s Room Retreat will offer a break of escapism for those who love to read and write, inspired by local authors Robert Burns and JM Barrie.

Facilities at Spa at Cairndale

There will be numerous relaxation areas and a thermal hydrotherapy pool on the lower ground floor.

On the second floor there will be a rasul, aroma steam room, herbal steam room, Himalayan salt sauna, infrared sauna, herbal lounge, hammam and private bathing suite.

An external spa garden will include a cold plunge and garden sauna, and there will be a dedicated café and juice bar and six treatment rooms.

"We are eight weeks into the construction phase of the new Spa at The Cairndale Hotel, with the space transforming on an almost daily basis. We have researched extensively and worked hard to truly understand what spa visitors want.”

Director, The Cairndale Hotel

The project has a net-zero focus, which has led to the inclusion of an enhanced heating system to reduce carbon emissions, plus the use of air-source heat pumps.

Director Matthew Wallace Jnr has expressed a strong commitment to respecting the planet and supporting British wellness brands.

Suppliers confirmed so far are Ellisons, BC Softwear for towels and robes and treatment products from Tribe517.

Additional brand partners are Gaia – marking the brand’s first Scottish hotel partnership – and Voya. There will also be exclusive collaborations with local businesses.
