Luxury marine skincare brand Thalgo has collaborated with eco organisation The SeaCleaners to help clean up the oceans and reduce plastic waste.

One part of the group’s work is The Manta Project, named after a boat that will collect and recycle plastic macro-waste from the world’s most polluted seas and oceans.

Thanks to the support of sponsors including Thalgo, construction of The Manta will begin in 2022 with a launch scheduled for 2024. As part of its work, crew on the boat will also collect data during scientific missions to increase knowledge about ocean contamination.

The SeaCleaners’ will also be carrying out large-scale waste collections on river shores and marine coastlines around the world.

“Eleven rivers in the world discharge around 90% of plastic,” said Yvan Bourgnon, founder of The SeaCleaners. “By targeting these strategic areas and taking action where plastic has not yet broken down, we will be more effective.”

“I sailed for two months, surrounded by plastic, along the coast of Indonesia, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. It's my generation that has polluted the oceans. Our aim is to fight on land and sea, through corrective and preventive missions."

One key aspect of the Thalgo partnership will be to raise awareness of how the general public can reduce plastic waste by changing their habits.

In 2019, it was reported that 360 million tonnes of plastic were produced. In response, The SeaCleaners has created an international scientific committee that will help to communicate their knowledge through educational kits and tools on plastic pollution.
