De Montel Terme di Milano, Italy’s largest urban thermal and wellness complex, has opened in the San Siro district of Milan.

The new spa, managed by Terme & Spa Italia, can accommodate up to 700 guests. It features ten geothermal pools – holding 800 cubic metres of water – supplied by a thermal spring located almost 400m underground.

Pools include the 34˚C Spring and Rain pools, the zero-gravity Suspension pool and the Pool of Lightness – a complete circuit of hydro-massage stations.

The 16,000sqm facility has 10,000sqm dedicated to outdoor space including a courtyard and landscaped green areas dedicated to relaxation and wellbeing. There is also a bistro restaurant, cafeteria, lounge bar and summer bar.

The entrance block features a cascading water installation that leads into a large central cloister, where there is a sensory garden and colour-themed pathways.

In the rear area, a large semicircular pool opens out into a space dedicated to four saunas, including a crystal sauna and large Russian Banya.

There is also a steam room, a tepidarium and a Hammam. Suppliers include Myrtha Wellness, Starpool and Talenti furniture.

In the outdoor courtyard there are five large thermal pools, including one directly in front of the façade, adorned with fountains and water features, alongside with three pools dedicated to balneotherapy.

With a focus on sustainability, the centre is equipped with solar panels on its roofs and three rainwater collection tanks for irrigation. There is also an advanced pool covering system that allows for efficient temperature management.

Terme di Saturnia Method

There are also 15 treatment rooms offering both classic programmes and signature experiences, plus nine relaxation areas.

Treatments use the Terme di Saturnia Method and products, an approach recognised for more than a century. It combines certified thermal water with effective manual techniques.

Terme di Saturnia is a 100-year-old spa destination in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma, where a 1,000-year-old spring surfaces at a constant temperature of 37.5°C.

Treatments include the Saturnia Deep massage, the Saturnia Soul massage and the Saturnia Kobido lifting facial.

The idea to redevelop the area into a balneotherapy-focused spa emerged in 2007, when the historic thermal spring at a depth of 396 metres was restored

The former 1921 De Montel Stables

Terme di Milano is housed in a former stables, the restored Scuderie De Montel, which was designed in 1920 by architect Vietti Violi.

The building was abandoned in the 1970s and has now been reimagined by Studio Marzorati and J+S, with input from the Archaeological Superintendence of Fine Arts and Landscape.

The restoration was made possible by a €50m (£42m) investment from the Infrastructure for Growth Fund by Azimut Group, in partnership with Terme & Spa Italia.

“The opening of De Montel -Terme Milano represents an example of virtuous collaboration for urban regeneration and the enhancement of historical heritage,” said Massimo Caputi,  president of Terme & SPA Italia.

“We are returning an extraordinary place to the city, where health, wellness and architecture meet.”
