A new global customer survey by fitness platform Virtuagym has revealed fitness technology has played ‘a crucial role’ for fitness businesses during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Undertaken while much of the fitness industry was still closed, the research surveyed approximately 400 respondents from across Virtuagym’s English, Dutch, German, Spanish and French speaking customers globally.

“We are excited to see the extent to which technology-driven solutions were embraced by fitness businesses to support them through such a difficult period for our industry."

Hugo Braam

CEO and co-founder, Virtuagym

Around half of gyms and a third of personal trainers used technology to provide at-home workout content, with half of fitness studios using digital apps. Fitness technology also proved essential in maintaining a sense of community amongst members, through online group classes and other in-app features.

Wearable technology has also proven invaluable, with more than half of gyms (51%) and 45% of personal trainers using fitness trackers to assist clients in meeting their fitness goals during the prolonged periods of restrictions.

Data suggest that fitness businesses will continue to combine physical and digital services as a long-term engagement and management solution.
