Italian spa design firm Studio Apostoli has been chosen to manage strategic consulting and the redevelopment of the historic Comano spa complex. Renovation is due to finish in 2025.

“To be allowed to redesign a historical healing space like Terme di Comano is amazing,” said Alberto Apostoli, studio founder.

“The project aims to preserve its founding values by combining them with a more contemporary philosophy that renews it as a place of total wellbeing – physical, mental and social.”

A natural paradise

Recognised since the mid-19th century for its curative mineral waters, Terme di Comano is located between the Brenta Alpine region and Lake Garda.

A natural paradise, the existing spa hotel, Grand Hotel Terme di Comano, sits within a 14-hectare park and offers breath-walking, forest bathing and meditation.

Studio Apostoli will completely redesign the complex, reordering the functional distribution of the rooms – totalling 11,135sqm – to add value to the existing structure, while also repositioning the offer.

The strategic and project consulting phase was completed in 2022 and features keywords such as sustainability, innovation, care (for the local area) and performance.

Inspired by water

Studio Apostoli’s vision is to create 12 themed areas over seven floors, all dedicated to personal wellbeing.

The vision is anchored by the central theme of water, to capitalise on the calcium and magnesium bicarbonate-rich local water, which is believed to help treat skin and respiratory issues.

Preventive and diagnostic medicine

There will be a water experience area, medical spa, wellness pathways, an outdoor pool, whirlpools, a panoramic sauna and a classically inspired Thermae Romanae.

Planned therapies include sensory stimulation, nebulisation, phototherapy and thermal baths, and families will also be catered for.

There will be beauty and nutrition-focused areas as well as rooms dedicated to spiritual care, mindfulness and meditation. A fitness area will offer rehabilitation and recovery treatments, utilising innovative technologies including virtual reality.

To complete the complex, there will be a preventive and diagnostic medicine section with an operating theatre and inpatient ward.

The interior concept will symbolise the layering of the natural environment, shaped by water. The concept has been developed around the theme of water and its journey from the river bed to the mountain peaks.

With different levels and gradient colours, interior design will be enhanced by lighting, green details and biophilic walls.

The project is founded on the objectives of sustainable development inspired by the UN 2030 Agenda.
