Plans have been submitted to transform an unused quarry lake and surrounding land into an eco-wellness resort in East Anglia. Centred on waterside living and water-based recreation, the 80-hectare Ashwicken Lake is located close to the Norfolk Broads  and combines woodlands and wetlands with a 1km-square lake at its centre.

A £35m (40.4m) investment by Norfolk Farm Leisure will see the site re-imagined as an eco-resort featuring what is believed to be the UK’s first floating clubhouse, which will house a spa and  be encircled by 132 contemporary lodges arranged in clusters. There will also be 22 treehouses nestled in the surrounding woodlands.

Distinctively designed by Baca Architects, the approach to Ashwicken Lake will take guests through a landscaped sequence upon arrival, with an emphasis on connecting with nature, ecological diversity and wellbeing.

The proposals target zero-carbon in both use and production, and will employ materials of low-bodied energy, high levels of thermal insulation and natural ventilation. The project will also be designed to a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ rating. All facilities will be open to both staying guests and locals.

Richard Coutts, principal of Baca Architects, said: “People have always been attracted to water for relaxation, exercise and rejuvenation. At Ashwicken Lake, these life-enhancing qualities will be supported by a design that will reinforce the engagement of both guests and visitors in an exceptional experience.”
