Rockliffe Hall introduces new sustainable barefoot spa days

Luxury golf resort and spa hotel Rockliffe Hall, in Darlington, has announced a new barefoot spa initiative.

In order to put sustainability to the fore, Rockliffe Hall is the first spa in the north-east to completely remove disposable slippers from its spa days.

The spa currently throws away more than 2,000 pairs of slippers per month, which has negative environmental implications.

A sustainable choice

The operators of Rockliffe Hall hope other spas and hotels will follow suit to reduce the overall negative impacts of waste in the industry.

Guests are free to enjoy the whole spa barefoot, but are being asked to bring footwear, such as slippers or sliders, for use in the spa restaurant, Nu Sana.

“Barefoot spa days are not an initiative we have seen in other resorts,” said Jason Adams, managing director of Rockliffe Hall. “My hope is that others will follow suit to reduce the overall negative impacts of waste in the hospitality industry.”

The changes will become policy on May 15.

Facilities at Rockliffe Hall spa include a tepidarium, infrared room, igloo, tropicarium, Roman sauna, salt steam, experience showers, a 20m swimming pool and an outdoor drench shower.

A hidden oasis enveloped within the existing spa, the spa garden offers views across the estate, blending indoors and outdoors with an outdoor infinity-edge hydrotherapy pool, sun deck and heated loungers.
