The Global Wellness Institute (GWI) has published its latest Guide to Hydrothermal Spa & Wellness Development Standards.

The fourth edition of the 230-page guide has been created in collaboration with the GWI Hydrothermal Initiative.

This initiative aims to increase awareness for the design and implementation of all elements of spas and wellness facilities involving thermal and wet treatments.

Guide to Hydrothermal Spa & Wellness

The publication is designed to help owners, operators and consultants understand the complexity of hydrothermal spaces and thermal experiences.

First published in 2014, the manual guides readers through everything from project planning to construction considerations.

It also defines the functions and benefits of thermal bathing and wet area experiences, both communal and private.

"Our main goal with this resource is to provide information readers can’t find elsewhere. This book is written to give a clear understanding of how hydrothermal areas should be designed and constructed.”

Don Genders

Chair of the GWI Hydrothermal Initiative and CEO of Design for Leisure

“The guide provides wellness benefits, practical tips and common building mistakes,” said Don Genders, chair of the GWI’s Hydrothermal Initiative and CEO of Design for Leisure. “To build these facilities correctly, precise technical knowledge is required: from material choice to drainage and electrical challenges.

“The required knowledge goes far beyond understanding what type of tiles can withstand high temperatures or which wood holds up best in a sauna.

“This guide is created in an effort to elevate industry standards and encourage builds that are both high quality and sustainable.”

Key hydrothermal considerations

With the increasing interest in communal wellness, developers, architects and designers are exploring the best way to incorporate hydrothermal wellness features into projects.

The guide outlines key considerations for anyone venturing into the creation of a hydrothermal zone, including:

  • Seek professional advice early
  • Be clear on budget, a wet area is not the place to cut corners.
  • The correct balance between pools and thermal experiences is important.
  • Don’t underestimate space requirements – wet spa areas often require twice the anticipated space to accommodate behind-the-scenes equipment.
  • Don’t forget the plant room and equipment in early planning stages.

“I endorse it as an essential tool for anyone venturing into the creation of a hydrothermal zone,” said Emlyn Brown, global senior vice-president of wellbeing at Accor and co-sponsor of the report with Hilton.

“I recognise the importance of getting the design and construction approach right. With the renewed interest in bathing, sauna experiences and self-guided thermal journeys, this resource has never been more crucial.”

“I’ve long been convinced that, when implemented correctly, hydrothermal experiences play a key role in wellness programming, offering proven wellness benefits that are difficult to achieve any other way.”

Susie Ellis

CEO and co-founder, GWI

“The fourth edition has been updated and expanded, and includes crucial information, which is available for free download,” said Susie Ellis, CEO and co-founder of the GWI. “With the renewed interest in bathing, sauna experiences and self-guided thermal journeys, this resource has never been more crucial.”

In addition to the support from Hydrothermal Initiative members, sponsorship was provided by hospitality brands Accor and Hilton.
