Gleneagles has appointed Carlos Urrutigoity as its new director of wellness.

Tasked with repositioning wellness as a core strategic pillar across the Perthshire estate, Urrutigoity brings more than 18 years of experience in pre-openings, performance sport and longevity-focused wellness.

His remit spans spa, fitness, racquets, recovery and member-based wellness with an emphasis on integrating nature and restorative wellbeing across guest touchpoints.

A distinctive wellness estate

Urrutigoity trained as an osteopath, beginning his career in private practice before moving into hospitality.

His early roles were at the Lensbury Club and Wentworth Golf Club, where he worked across fitness, racquets and members’ wellness.

He went on to become head of sports and wellbeing at the Lansdowne Club, before joining Cliveden House, where he managed wellness and spa operations.

Urrutigoity has held spa and wellbeing director roles across major UK openings including Centre Point, Nobu Portman Square and Fairmont Windsor Park.

He was also health and wellbeing director at BodyHoliday St Lucia, leading a team of 80 across seven departments. Most recently he served as managing director of Grey Wolfe, a private members’ club focused on longevity and biotech-driven recovery.

At Gleneagles, Urrutigoity’s priority is a full audit of the estate's wellness ecosystem

Plans for the Gleneagles Spa

“Across these roles, I accumulated more than 18 years’ leadership experience spanning pre-openings, turnaround, spa and longevity-focused wellness,” said Urrutigoity.

At Gleneagles, his priority is a full audit of the estate’s wellness ecosystem, from treatments and facilities to outdoor and adventure programming, guest flow and commercial performance.

“I will lead the elevation and repositioning of wellness as a core strategic pillar at Gleneagles,” he added.

“The role includes shaping product strategy, driving innovation across treatments and experiences, refining guest journeys and partnering on long-term development projects such as spa expansion.”

Recovery-led experiences

Urrutigoity has plans to introduce performance and recovery-led innovations at the estate.

“Longer term, I am looking to expand outdoor and nature-based wellness programming,” he said. “My goal is to integrate new technologies and recovery modalities, and reimagine the thermal and wet facilities to support ritual and contrast therapies.”

Urrutigoity’s appointment follows a period of investment in the spa’s treatment offering. Gleneagles recently partnered with aromatherapy brand Moods to launch a Scotland-exclusive treatment, combining neuroaromatic blends with Therabody technology.
