Following extensive renovation work, the Hubertus Mountain Refugio Allgäu in Balderschwang is to open in June 2021.

In January 2019, a deviated avalanche destroyed the entire spa area as well as other parts of the wellness-focused hotel.

The new 2,500sqm building features Far Eastern and Alpine elements, such as a Zen garden with Japanese onsen pool.

"After the avalanche in January 2019, we just wanted to look forward. In such an uncertain time, it is already a challenge to invest several million euros, but we had to and must continue to develop in order to position ourselves on the market in the long term."

Owner, Hubertus Mountain Refugio Allgaü

Costing 15m (£12.9m) to build, the spa was designed by Beer, Bembé Dellinger Architects with interior design co-developed by Christa Traubel and AHA 360Grad. Dr Franz Linser also consulted on the early stages of the project.

Other facilities include various saunas and a micro-salt room supplied by KLAFS, ten treatment rooms with treatment couches by Ionto Comed; a natural bathing pond and an infinity pool.

A nature-inspired relaxation space at the spa

Spa treatments will feature Ananné, Babor and Team Dr Josef. Dedon have supplied the ‘hanging egg’ furniture while Gharieni supplied Ayurvedic Couches and MD Natural Wood created the spa’s outdoor furniture.
