Matfen Hall prepares to launch new Aurelius Spa

Matfen Hall has announced the launch of Aurelius Spa at Matfen Hall, the property’s new 2,800 sqm spa and wellness destination. The project, opening at the end of October 2026, will complete the final phase of the estate’s six-year, multi-million-pound transformation.

Set within the grade II-listed country house and its 300 acres of private Northumberland parkland, the spa has been designed as a sanctuary that draws on the historic building’s heritage and its surrounding landscape.

Seam Architecture is responsible for the project. Joanne George is head of leisure and will oversee the day-to-day operation of the spa.

Housed within an expansive new wing of the hotel, Aurelius Spa at Matfen Hall doubles the footprint of the former spa and brings together some of the industry’s most respected brands.

Extensive spa facilities

At the heart of the spa is an 18-metre indoor pool set beneath a vaulted beamed ceiling. Floor-to-ceiling arched windows take their inspiration from the stained-glass window in the Grand Hall entrance of the hotel, and natural materials create a neutral colour palette, with locally sourced stone, Welsh slate and oak panelling found throughout. The pools were designed by Barr + Wray.

Guests can enjoy the thermal Roman sauna, Brass Monkey ice baths, Himalayan salt sauna, aromatherapy steam room and thermal experience showers. Saunas were supplied by DaleSauna. Beyond this is the relaxation room, complete with a personalised VR experience.

Aurelius Spa also boasts a dining lounge with a new food concept and a champagne and juice bar. The surrounding sensory garden houses a vitality pool surrounded by aromatic botanicals, herbs and flowers and arches in an open-air courtyard.

The brands behind the project

Facilities also include a sunlight therapy room and red-light therapy room, a cryotherapy chamber and hyperbaric oxygen chamber

These sit alongside six treatment rooms, each fitted with Gharieni MLE Neo treatment beds.

There is a modern TechnoGym-equipped gym with a Pilates and yoga studio.

The spa will be open to non-resident guests for spa days and will also operate a membership programme, providing members with exclusive benefits.

Additional equipment was supplied by Ellisons and uniforms have been created by La Beeby with towels and spa linens by BC Softwear. Journey will install the spa software.

Treatment menu with visible results

The spa’s philosophy centres on visible, lasting results, with treatments using botanically sourced products from Natural Spa Factory. Signature 90-minute rituals include the gold-infused Ultra Gold Experience, the mineral-rich Head to Toe Serenity Ritual and the circulation-boosting Invigorating Scrub.

Matfen Hall has further collaborated with Natural Spa Factory on an exclusive bathroom amenities range, with scents including yuzu and watermelon, lime and lemongrass, and fig and vanilla.

A new approach to spa dining

Aurelius Spa will offer all-day dining with variations in menu choice throughout the day. Guest can choose smoothies, fresh fruit and freshly baked pastries in the morning.

A chilled mezze display allowing guests to build their own plate from a choice of proteins and garnishes through the day.

Sweet treats with herbal infusions or hot beverages are more popular during the afternoons. Poolside and spa deck service will also be available.
