SubRosa spa opens at The Grand, York

Following an extensive renovation, the new £2.8m wellness facility has opened to guests

SubRosa, the new underground spa at the Grand Hotel in York has opened following a £2.8m refurbishment.

Positioned within the heart of the hotel’s vault, SubRosa provides a wellness offering inspired by experiences from all around the world. With five treatment rooms, facilities include a double hammam, a Tirol hot sauna, a Himalayan salt sauna and a salt and light therapy room.

There is also a herbal steam room, herbal lounge, a large hydrotherapy pool by TopLine and foot spas.

SubRosa is a Latin name meaning ‘under the rose’. The spa’s wellness philosophy has been devised around secrecy, nurture and care, to meet the evolving expectations of modern travellers.

Thermal facilities are all supplied by by TopLine. The spa worked with Yorkshire-based spa designer consultancy Curveline.

Relaxation rooms feature Lemi loungers, while in the treatment rooms beds also by Lemi. Alongside treatments, the spa offers an Immersive Sunlight Experience.

The spa is provides a collection of marocMaroc rituals, inspired by Moroccan traditions, which use argan oil and amber to rejuvenate and include cleansing hammam journey and the ultimate rasul ritual.

SubRosa being the first spa in the north of England to launch experiences by bio-tech brand, SeaBody, which use advanced marine bioactive treatments to restore the skin.

Uniforms have been supplied by Florence Roby, while towels and spa linens are from BC SoftWear. The spa has been set up using software by Trybe.

Spa director Emma Sorby has devised three new spa rituals – Rosa, Alba and Radix – to ensure guests re-emerge feeling renewed and revitalised.

Rosa is a full day experience that includes a 60-minute treatment and a rasul ritual for two, while Radix is an evening experience including dinner in the SubRosa restaurant and a glass of Champagne.

Guests will also be able to experience a cleansing mud rasul, a purifying hammam or an Immersive Sunlight Experience, to elevate mood and energy.

“Each touchpoint has been carefully considered to include innovative new wellness technologies and treatments, as well as a wider holistic experience,” says spa director Emma Sorby. “SubRosa doesn’t just offer spa treatments, it delivers thoughtfully curated wellness experiences for each guest. Our offer blends globally respected traditions with scientifically advanced products.”
