Community interest company Trafford Leisure has opened a unique public sector spa in Trafford, near Manchester.

The 500sqm Cove spa is one of only a handful of public sector spa offerings in the UK.

The Cove is situated in the move Altrincham leisure centre, which recently reopened after £20m transformation. The 500sqm spa has four treatment rooms and a large thermal area, supplied by Sauna360.

Democratising wellness

Facilities include a vitality pool, sensory and drench showers, an ice fountain and heated relaxation loungers. There is also an aroma steam room with back heated ceramic tiles, a herbal infusion juniper sauna and salt therapy sauna with natural Himalayan salt blocks.

Facials and body treatments are by Elemis, with three manicure stations and two pedicure stations offer treatments using Mii.

Operating in a community leisure setting, the spa is striving to democratise access to wellness for all local residents.

“The spa sector can often feel exclusive and inaccessible. By offering accessible treatments and spa experiences, the Cove is helping us reimagine community leisure wellness, creating a space where physical activity and relaxation seamlessly come together for our local residents.”

Jo Cherrett

CEO, Trafford Leisure

“This is the second Trafford Leisure site to open under the new move brand; we are proud to redefine what community wellness looks and feels like,” said Jo Cherrett, CEO of Trafford Leisure.

“This is about so much more than just a new leisure centre; it’s about bringing people together and supporting wellbeing for all ages.”

A community-focused spa offering

The Cove also offers beauty salon services and a dedicated treatment menu for teens.

Holistic offerings include reflexology, reiki, hopi ear candles and Indian head massage. Spa days and packages start from £55, with thermal access beginning at £30 and treatments starting from £40.

Facilities at move Altrincham

As well as the Cove , the new move Altrincham leisure centre also features two swimming pools, a wellness assessment room and two flexible studio spaces.

Spa uniforms are supplied by Florence Roby, while towels, robes and spa linens are by BC SoftWear. RMS supplies the spa treatment beds, and Journey software is used in the spa.

“Wellness shouldn’t be a luxury; in today’s fast-paced world it’s increasingly needed by everyone,” said Jan Roby, director at Florence Roby.

“We supply uniforms to some of the UK’s leading five-star spas. It’s a pleasure to ensure the therapist team at one of the UK’s only public sector spas looks polished and professional as they help make spa experiences more accessible to a wider demographic.”

“The Cove is about injecting a dose of serenity into people’s lives. My philosophy is centred around the belief that true wellness starts with self-care; you wouldn’t let your phone battery go flat, so why let your own energy run low?"

Bev Hinnigan

Spa manager, the Cove

Everyone deserves to have access to tailored wellness, curated just for their needs, and to leave the spa feeling refreshed and mentally recharged,” said the Cove’s spa manager, Bev Hinnigan. “That’s what we’re aiming to offer everyone who walks through the doors.”

“It’s pleasing to see a UK spa offering high-end wellness services that are affordable, accessible and open to all, moving beyond the traditional luxury market to become more inclusive,” added Barbara Cooke, founder and CEO, BC SoftWear.

“BC SoftWear is thrilled to supply towels, robes and spa linens to a spa project that offers wellness services and spa treatments tailored to the needs of local communities.”

Trafford Leisure is a community interest company wholly owned by Trafford Council, which manages leisure in Trafford on behalf of the council, using any profits and assets for community benefit.
