Six Senses has announced the delevelopment of a new resort on the Maltese island of Comino.

Located on two bays of the island, Six Senses Comino will offer a collection of 71 low-rise suites and 19 stand-alone retreats as well as a comprehensive spa.

Comino Island, midway between Malta and Gozo, was once was a refuge for exiled knights and philosophers, and is classified as a Natura 2000 site, offering guests a tranquil island escape.

The investors, HV Hospitality, a subsidiary of Hili Ventures, have set out to meet all aspects of the Natura 2000 management plan through a sensitive, sustainable design strategy.

“We're doing something unique in the Maltese hotel landscape, creating a lavish and sustainable resort on a small footprint to make way for new trees and shrubs and, as a result, a thriving environment for new guests and returning wildlife."

Blurring indoor and outdoor spaces

Six Senses Comino, located on the shores of San Niklaw and San Marija Bays, has been designed by Belvedere Architecture.

The two distinct sites will be fully rebuilt within the existing area of development using low impact construction methods.

The 71 low-rise suites will offer views of the Mediterranean from private terraces. Full-height openings and terraces will blur the boundaries between outdoor and indoor space, encouraging star gazing and total immersion in nature.

Infinity pools on the ground floor will serve as private rock pools, inviting guests to lie back and ‘limpet’ in the shallows.

Holistic design strategy

The 19 stand-alone retreats will each have green roofs and terraces to follow the natural terrain.

Melo Hili, CEO of Hili Ventures, said: “Six Senses, one of the world’s leading hotel brands in sustainable tourism, is the perfect partner for this new property.

“The brand has a history of weaving long-term positive change and impact for good into the fabric of each property. We share the same goal.”

As part of the holistic design strategy, contractors will carefully dismantle existing structures, regenerate portions of disturbed land, and improve the skyline by reducing the height of the retreats to a single level.

Timber will be a primary material due to its low embodied energy and compatibility with prefabrication.
