Mama Shelter, a group with 17 hotels globally has opened in Rennes, France with its first Spa Mama Skin.

Designed by Benjamin El Doghaïli, architect and head of the Mama Shelter design studio, the Rennes property embraces the city’s vibrant heritage. The hotel features 119 bedrooms with unique design elements that mark it as part of the Mama Shelter family.

"The spa experience begins as soon as you walk through the door. In the basement, the deeper you go, the more you lose your codes and shed all your baggage."

The hotel is home to the group’s very first Spa Mama Skin. Said to be the larget spa in Rennes, the 380sqm wellbeing centre features a 12m-long swimming pool, a hammam and a sauna supplied by Ouest Piscine Concept. There are two single and one duo massage cabins built under stone vaults that feature treatment beds from Code. Guests can also enjoy a gym that features a treadmill, bikes, weights and yoga.

The treatment menu introduces Absolution, a certified organic, gender-fluid and non-toxic beauty brand with an eco-inspired design; Ho Karan, a holistic and sustainable Breton brand offers natural hemp treatments to help reduce stress, while manicures from Manucurist use vegan nail polishes that are cruelty-free and made in France.

Designed by Mama Shelter’s in-house design team, Spa Mama Skin Rennes draws on local heritage for its overall look. “We used a lot of tiles and earthenware developed by the Bouroullec brothers, well-known designers from Brittany,” says Benjamin El Doghaïli.

El Doghaïli’s team was inspired by Jules Verne’s Journey to the Centre of the Earth, as well as the region of Brittany, and sought to reflect the spa’s closeness to the earth and minerals.

Other spa suppliers on the project include spa software from Kiute, and water rowers from NOHrD.
