Laugaras Lagoon will open next month in Iceland’s popular tourism route, the Golden Circle, offering a transformative take on the traditional geothermal bathing experience.

A cascading waterfall lagoon, the Laugaras wellbeing experience combines Iceland’s unique geothermal heritage with farm-to-table dining in one of the country’s best locations to witness the aurora borealis.

Located along the banks of the Hvíta River in the village of Laugaras, which is known for its geothermal activity, the two-storey lagoon spans 1,000sqm.

“We feel strong support from the local community and are also seeing considerable interest from international travellers, who have already started booking their visits. Our team is dedicated creating a unique experience for our future guests.”

In addition to the therapeutic geothermal waters, which are maintained at 38-40°C, guests can enjoy 270sqm of outdoor facilities.

These include two saunas – one dry, one wet – designed by T.ark as well as a cold plunge pool, outdoor showers and a warm forest pool in a woodland setting.

The space includes a secluded grotto for deep relaxation and two swim-up bars allow guests to enjoy drinks without leaving the water.

Immersive wellness

The natural, immersive wellness concept has been developed by Mannverk. It is owned by Norverk and operated by Laugaras Lagoon ehf.

The two-level design includes a collaboration with Hildiberg Lighting Design and interiors by Anthony Bacigalupo, working with T.ark Architects.

Designed to blend into the natural surroundings, the structures feature large glass panels for uninterrupted river and landscape view and use locally sourced wood.

Laugaras Lagoon will not offer individual spa treatments, but will focus on sensory wellness through its bathing experience.

A custom scent has been developed in collaboration with Sonja Bent from Nordic Angan, which captures the natural essence of Laugaras. This signature fragrance is featured in Laugaras’ shower gel, shampoo, conditioner and hand soap.

Culinary excellence

Gísli Matt, one of Iceland’s most celebrated chefs, has created a revolutionary approach for Laugaras for the Ylja Restaurant, which means warmth in Icelandic.

The seasonal menu uses wild Icelandic herbs, seaweeds, berries and ingredients sourced from local farms, fisheries, and geothermal greenhouses.

Every element focuses on sustainability, with fermentation and preservation used to minimise waste.
