Danish designers Peter Bundgaard and Signe Bindslev Henriken of Space Copenhagen have been appointed to create the interiors for the Svart project in Norway’s Arctic Circle.

A glass-fronted, circular property located at the base of the Svartisen glacier, Svart will house an indoor-outdoor spa that will use sustainable, locally-sourced products as well as an education centre, four restaurants and a design laboratory.

Svart will be the first hotel inside the Arctic Circle in Norway

Billed as ‘the world’s first energy-positive hotel’, Svart is scheduled to open in late 2022 and will float on stilts above the Holandsfjorden. Consuming 85% less energy than traditional hotels, it aims to be fully off-grid, carbon neutral and zero-waste within the first five years of operation.

Space Copenhagen will lead interior design for the entire property, tasked with creating an aesthetic that reflects the project’s core values of sustainability and innovation.

Co-founded by Bungaard and Bindslev Henriksen in 2005, Space Copenhagen is responsible for a number of award-winning design projects. Recent work includes the 11 Howard Hotel in New York, US, and The Stratford in London, UK.

“The design aesthetic does not seek to mimic or filter the magnificence of the Norwegian landscape, but to be a humble backdrop to it.”

The Svart project is being overseen by development director Ivaylo Lefterov, who commented: “It was essential for us to find a design partner that shared our vision, with the ability to create a truly stunning aesthetic that both complements and emphasises the natural beauty of the destination without distracting from it.

“Longevity, human connection and a distinctly Scandinavian quality – themes which run through Bungaard and Bindslev Henriksen’s award-winning work – will be at the heart of the Svart experience.”
