Van Oys Maastricht Retreat, a five-star hotel in The Netherlands, has revealed its new Oysana Spa.

Inspired by Blue Zone research and rooted in the local traditions of South Limburg, Oysana Spa is guided by LifeFulness – a modern approach to living a long, vibrant and meaningful life.

The vision for the retreat is rooted in Cittaslow philosophy, which focuses on deceleration, authenticity, cultural heritage, warm hospitality and respect for nature.

Cittaslow is rooted in the values of regionality, authenticity and mindfulness, combined with the Blue Zone approach to a long, healthy life.

It is the first spa in Benelux to work with the Nordic skincare brand woods copenhagen.

The partnership will see Oysana integrating woods_ clinically proven formulations with traditional techniques to create a sensory wellbeing concept.

“With Oysana, we are taking our Cittaslow philosophy to a new level. This spa embodies our commitment to sustainable, nature-connected wellbeing for body, mind, soul and environment. Oysana captures the essence of the region in every detail.”

The SlowSync principle

Oysana stands for wellbeing as a way of life and at the spa’s core lies the SlowSync principle.

SlowSync represents the art of bringing inner rhythms into harmony with those of nature.

Oysana will merge ancient wisdom with state-of-the-art technology to regenerate guests’ bodies and minds.

The spa has been created to offer a sanctuary of conscious deceleration, where guests can let go of stress, regenerate their natural energy and reconnect with their inner balance.

Touchless biohacks and slow journeys

Facilities include a thermal spa circuit with a Finnish sauna, bio sauna, steam cabin, cold water cascade and footbath. There is also a spring-fed plunge pool and experience showers.

The spa is offering cutting-edge touchless biohacks – called the SlowSync Journeys. Journeys include infrared, magnesium, weightlessness, sound and vibration therapy to promote better sleep, metabolism, stress reduction and mental resilience.

Oysana’s Moods by woods_ are intuitive touch therapies designed to meet guests in their emotional and energetic state in the present moment. They include Serenity Mood, a gentle retreat into stillness, and Aurora Mood, which infuses the body with fresh energy and clarity.

“True excellence lies in the balance between nature and innovation,” says spa manager Maureen Smeets. “Oysana our contribution to a new spa culture that cultivates LifeFulness.”

Architecture and design

The architecture of Oysana Spa is guided by the principle ‘form follows the flow of energy’.

Architects SATIJNplus from the Netherlands, alongside Austrian firm MACH Bau Kitzbühel, have used rounded, organic structures to define the design. There are curved walls, oval forms and rounded seating areas creating a soft, flowing impression.

Local Kunrader limestone, oak, clay and natural textiles are used and the hotel’s own spring water is a central element in both design and treatments.

The recently opened (June 2025) 81-room Van Oys Maastricht Retreat is a member of Leading Hotels of the World.

It sits in the former Kasteel Oost, a historic castle with origins in the 13th century, and offers guests stays that are formulated around the essence of slow travel.
