Viceroy at Ombria Algarve in Portugal has revealed plans for its new 4,250sqm destination spa.

Set to open in May, the eight treatment room spa has been conceptualised in partnership with wellness expert Greg Payne. His experience includes wellness offerings at Aman, IHG, Estelle Manor and Beaverbrook.

The concept has been designed to restore internal and external connection through powerful rituals, products created by local artisanal herbalists, and mindful movement.

Detailed design is the work of WATG, alongside local architects Promontorio and interior designers, Wimberly Interiors.

“The spa is based around the concept of love. Too many people misunderstand love and think it's all about Valentine's Day and having a red rose on your pillow. In truth, its foundation stems from self-love. To achieve this we must first learn to accept, let go and embrace.”

“We discovered a traditional Algarve story telling how white almond blossoms were planted in the region to comfort a Nordic princess who missed the snow of her homeland,” said Payne.

“This story, coupled with the sense of space and intimacy each treatment rooms provides, led us to the realisation that we needed to honour love through our spa concept.

“This principle has been applied to our menu, with treatments combining local herbs and essential oils to create powerful benefits. It will continue through to our event programme, which will honour the phases of the moon.”

Treatment menu

Working with local artisanal growers and herbalists, Viceroy at Ombria Algarve has developed a bespoke range of products. They have been blended to support the process of acceptance, intention setting and embracing the present during treatments.

The menu will also fetaures treatments by Ignae, a skincare brand from the Azores, and biodynamically led agrocosmetic brand Oway, made in Bologna, Italy.

“The spa is centred around reconnecting with one another, with the self and with nature,” said spa manager Leonie Gallo. “This philosophy will be brought through a combination of stillness, touch, mindful movement, nutritious dining and local experiences.

“Our spa space will invite guests to slow down and recalibrate on a deeper level physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.”
