British skincare brand Wildsmith has revealed its new, 100 per cent home compostable packaging.

Created in partnership with packaging innovators Shellworks, two of Wildsmiths products will now feature the home compostable vivomer packaging.

Crafted from a biopolymer made by natural microbes and derived from plants, vivomer carries the strength and resilience of plastic but none of its lasting harm.

Naturally pigmented and stable throughout its use, when vivomer is disposed of in home compost bins, in soil or in landfill, it is recognised by naturally abundant microbes.

These microbes break vivomer down as nourishment until no trace remains. This process takes around 52 weeks in a healthy home compost bin.

“From our first meeting we have been inspired by Shellworks’ team's ingenuity when it comes to reimagining a world without plastic. The introduction of vivomer to our packaging is a demonstration of our unwavering commitment to constant innovation and to minimising our environmental impact.”

The packaging is currently being used for Wildsmith’s Active Repair Copper Peptide Cream and Ceramide Repair Balm. It will rolled out to a further four Wildsmith products during 2025, as the original recyclable glass jars are sold.

“We met Wildsmith early in our journey and their focus on constantly improving their impact has kept us close,” says Amir Afshar, Shellworks co-founder.

“We love working with pioneering brands who are eager to help shape the future and change our relationship to plastic.”

Founded in 2019 in London by a team of makers and scientists, Shellworks started looking at how they could eliminate plastic pollution. They’ve since developed vivomer, a stable, safe and performant alternative to plastic that’s home compostable.
